by Tuyet Van Huynh
An experimental short film using movement, space and drums, exploring the idea of stripping away western ideology of beauty and what it feels like to stand in our own skin, being ESEA (East & Southeast Asian), being a s i a n.
a s i a n presents the complexities of being East & Southeast Asian (ESEA) through the British ESEA lens and how we grapple with periods in our lives where we have felt that not being white is a source of fear and shame, and the times where we have grown up and felt obliged to deny our difference to fit in. What happens when we confront western ideologies of beauty and journey through the moments of darkness to joy, moving towards celebration and healing in our own skin.
Tuyet wrote, produced and directed the film which premiered as part of a one off multidisciplinary performance piece at London’s Rich Mix March 2023. The film is now on its way to festivals. Generously supported by Genesis Foundation and Arts Council of England.
This is Tuyet’s first film.
